Belly Fat Could Double Death Risk

A study done in Europe with 360,000 participants in one of the longest health studies in the world was featured in the New England Journal of Medicine in November. What the study found was that people with the most visceral fat (in layman's terms, belly fat) had double the mortality rate of those that had less fat around the midsection. Here are some of the specifics outlined by the study... Continue reading

Check Your Health Before You Wreck Your Health!

My father passed this past September.  It was a trying time for me.  When I came back to Maryland from Texas after the funeral.  I had a lot of stuff to do, so the thing that suffered the most was my workouts.  I figured no big deal.  I am in great shape.  A couple of months won't hurt.  Well I started back about two weeks ago and for some reason… Continue reading

Being Healthy Can Benefit You Even When You Get Sick

Recently, my 85 year old grandfather fell and fractured his hip. At 85, that can be a serious issue. My grandfather just came out of his hip replacement surgery with flying colors and is recuperating right now as I write this blog entry. It got me to thinking about my own situation... It May Be All In The Family…Literally

I recently had a discussion with my aunt who has been a registered nurse for the past 30 plus years. She was complementing me on the site; I really liked that because she wouldn't if she didn't like it. We began to talk about family history... Continue reading

Diabetes on the Rise: The Handwriting is On the Wall!!

I recently wrote a post about an article in the Washington Post on the rising cost of diabetes medication and how being healthy could benefit both the health of your body and your finances. Not two days later another article talks about the rise in the number of diabetes cases. Both articles have a startling and equally scary reality. This rise has been 100% over the last 10 years (7 years for the rise in cost). Here is a breakdown by state... Continue reading

Add Signs and Symptoms

When I was a little boy. I was diagnosed with what was called then, "hyperactivity". I couldn't sit still. Over the past 40 plus years I have developed a better understanding of what was called hyperactivity then and is now called attention deficit disorder (ADD) or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The issue , however, is how do you differentiate between a child that has had too much sugar and a child that has ADD signs symptoms. The unique position I have is that while I have not been diagnosed as an adult. There are some clear indications that can differentiate a precocious child from a child that may have ADD. I want to share with you what I have learned... Continue reading

Get Healthy! Your Life Depends On It!

In 1992 at the age of 25, I was diagnosed with type II diabetes. Over the course of the next 15 years I would have an angioplasty, a stent placed in my heart and prostate cancer, ALL BEFORE I TURNED 40. I found myself taking 7 pills a day and giving myself a shot. Today, I am in the best shape of my life. I lift weights and do cardio exercise for 2 hours, 5 days a week and I feel better than I did when I was 20. How did I do it?
