Diet and Nutrition: The Deciding Factor in Weight Loss

I stumbled upon a interesting article on the MSNBC website that I had to share with my readers. If you have read this blog for any length of time you know how important I think exercise is. And if you look at this blog you will also see how important nutrition is, but this article I read really shined a lot on priority. In other words, which of these two factors had the most impact with respect to weight loss... Continue reading

U Can Be Healthy Recipe of the Week: Southwest Salmon and Sweet Potatoes

I know this is another salmon recipe, but I have to be honest. I love salmon and you can't beat it as a fish from a nutrients quotient perspective. I promise. I won't have another salmon recipe. ;-) OK, with that out of the way, being from Texas I love southwestern food. What I like about this recipe is that it satisfies all of my requirements for a good recipe. In my house we have a cooking objective. It is called balance. Sweet vs. Sour. Hot vs. Mild. Acidity vs. Alkaline. This recipes accomplishes all of these requirements. The combination of the sweet potatoes against the spices with the orange slices knocks it out of the park... Mindless Eating: The Science of Overeating

I watched a CNN special hosted by Dr. Sanjay Gupta. It was extremely telling. I was interested in this special because I have always been curious about the fact that as a country we are getting fatter and unhealthier. Despite the fact that there is a plethora of information about diet and nutrition in this country. As I suspected, it has as much to do with our environment, our culture and myriad of other influences, such as inherited eating habits from our family. The article talked about many things, but there were some points made in this show that I think are worth mentioning. These are just a few... Continue reading

“Super Foods” Are They Super?

One of the things that really bothered me during my health issues was the lack of knowledge and/or concern from doctors when it came to discussing nutrition or diet in combating disease. It is so neglected that for many people (including myself) wonder if there is some type of conspiracy, but seriously. Since my cancer surgery I made a decision that I would include foods that I thought provided me the best opportunity for a healthy life. I did a lot of research and my first question is what makes a "superfood" a super food. Here is a definition, based on a citation in the Oxford English Dictionary... Continue reading

Eating Healthy On The Go: Burger King

Today's post features a healthy food choice from Burger King. Most, if not all fast food restaurants have healthy food choice alternatives now. At Burger King one of these is the TenderGrill Chicken Sandwich. Just so you know. I don't feature salads and stuff like that because in my opinion, if you want a salad you need to go to a salad bar. But that is just my opinion. Here are the numbers for Burger King... Continue reading

Know What You Eat: Read The Label

Today I am about to do some shopping for my upcoming winter workout program and I was thinking about how I am amazed at the nutritional content in many of these foods that we think are "healthy". I completely shutout processed foods like frozen meals with few exceptions. Why? Because if you look at many of those products you would be amazed at the nutritional content in those foods. How do you find out what is in what you are eating? Here is how... Continue reading

Eating Healthy On The Go: Wendys

Another one of my favorite health choices when eating on the go is the Wendy's Ultimate Chicken Grill sandwich. The thing I like the most about this sandwich is the size of the chicken fillet. It is a nice size and this is good for protein if you are working out. Here are the numbers for a typical healthy meal eating the Ultimate Chicken Grill sandwich... Continue reading
