As a type 2 diabetic, I rarely concern myself with regard to low blood sugar. Type 2 diabetics typically battle with elevated blood sugar (hyperglycemia), but not paying attention to low blood sugar got me into some trouble. And to be truthful, of the two conditions, hypoglycemia is a lot scarier, literally. This is especially true when you are on medicines and you start to work out and get in shape and don’t adjust your meds accordingly. This is what happened to me. Ok, let’s get started.
Signs and Symptoms of Hypoglycemia:
- Feeling anxious
- Dizziness or Lightheaded
- Perspiration
- nervousness and shakiness - This feels similar to the feeling of being afraid. I can’t explain it any better than that. That’s usually how I know my sugar is low.
- sleepiness
- difficulty speaking
My Two Cents: As a type 2 diabetic, the key with diabetes is management. This is especially true with respect to hypoglycemia because it is usually your medicines, physical activity, lack of eating or a combination of all of these factors that leads to low blood sugar. So it is incumbent upon the diabetic to be properly prepared for the possibility of your sugar being low. Here are some suggestions of things you can do to be prepared.
Things To Do To Handle Low Blood Sugar:
- Have Snacks Handy: Always have decent snacks handy, such as, crackers, whole wheat bread or preferably some type of fruit. Candy is always good to have for emergencies, but preferably you want to have something that doesn’t spike your blood sugar
- Have a Meter Handy: Have a blood glucose meter with you as much as possible. Because these symptoms can be construed as something else. It is good to be able to take you sugar just in case. If nothing else it gives you a reassuring feeling.
- Have a Medic Alert Bracelet On: If you don’t have a medic alert bracelet, get one. This can be a lifesaver if you find yourself in a pickle when your blood sugar is low, especially if you become incoherent.
Well, that’s it. There are a ton of resources out there. I hope this was helpful in some way. Please let me know. I love comments.
