It Pays To Stay Healthy: The Cost of Diabetes Medication Rising

Yesterday morning and I heard something that got my attention. The news story was discussing the cost of diabetes medication. According to the story between 2001 and 2007, the price of diabetes medication has more than doubled. It went from 6.7 billion in 2001 to 12.5 billion in 2007. I was surprised. Why? I have insurance, so I didn’t notice any doubling of the cost, but this got me to thinking. What impact is this going to have on this country and the world as a whole? Diabetes is at near epidemic levels and the healthcare system doesn’t seem to be getting any better. Well I can’t answer that question, but it is clear we have some interesting days ahead. But it ultimately brings me to my real point in writing this post. There is a serious financial benefit to getting and staying healthy.

One of the financial liabilities of not taking care of our health is the cost of medications, among other things, such as life insurance coverage. Because of my health issues, getting insurance costs and arm and a leg. Thank God I’m a veteran. If not I would be in a pickle with respect to life insurance coverage. What am I saying? I am saying that staying healthy has multiple benefits, not the least of them being that it is lighter on your wallet.

Before I got cancer I would tease my sister who ate health food like it was going out of style. She went to the holistic doctor. The whole nine yards. When I saw how much some of the stuff she was buying cost. I would tell her she was crazy. Her response was eerily telling. She would retort, “You can pay now OR pay later!” My cancer surgery costs $114k (Thank God for medical coverage). When I am buying food from Whole Foods or my gym membership. I think about that cancer medical bill and realize I am saving my life and my money. Well, thats it. Remember, Get Healthy!! Your Life Depends On It!!!
