When you have all of the health challenges I have had and are able to come back from it in better shape than before, people invariably ask you what are you doing or what did you do. I recently sat back and thought about it and it occurred to me that for the most part I did what most people do. I ate well. I worked out consistently along with a host of other things, but what was it that was unique? The more I pondered it, the more I realized that it was the little things I did that had a huge cumulative effect. As someone who has 27 hours worth of stuff to do in 24 hours. I am not always able to get to the gym and get my normal structured exercise program in and eat my normal diet. I have to basically find ways to get my workout in and eat right during the day. So I did a couple of things when I wasn’t able to workout and eat right as I normally do. Here are just a few of them:
Exercise
Take the Stairs - This is one of the best ways to burn some calories on the sly. If you work on the 19th floor it is probably not the move to go from the lobby to the 19th floor. People tend to look at you funny when you come into work exhausted with your shirt drenched. Typically, I walk between five to six flights of stairs. That is a pretty good workout. If you are on the 19th floor this means you would take the elevator up to the 14th floor and walk the rest of the way up.
Park Far Away - When you go to a store or restaurant. Don’t circle the front of the establishment waiting for a spot. Park far away and walk up. This has two benefits. First, you will burn some calories. Second, you are guaranteed a parking space. :-)
Take Mass Transit - Now I can only speak for the Washington DC Metro area, where you have to do some walking to get to the metro rail and in many cases the Metro is some distance from your destination. This has multiple benefits. You burn calories. You help the environment by not driving and you save money. Gas ain’t cheap. :-)
Eating Right:
Prepare early - Because I don’t know what the day holds I try to keep some snacks with me that are wholesome and nutritional. I tend to have them at my office and at home and carry some if I think I am going to be on the move.
Identify Convenient Places to Get Good Nutritional Food - I have certain places I can go to get certain types of foods. For example, if I need to get a protein shake and I am not at home. They sell them in the 7-eleven (this all depends on your locality). My point is find somewhere you know you can get some good food, just in case you don’t have time to fix your food.
Prepare Your Own Food - This is one of the most important things you can do. There is no better way to ensure that you eat right than by preparing the food yourself. I worked in food establishments as one my first jobs and let me tell you. Health is not the primary objective in these types of places, but if you can’t prepare your own food and you have to purchase from these places than have as much information as you can to know what you are eating. I have created a web page on this site with the restaurant/fast food nutritional facts of the places I frequent. In this particular case, what you don’t know may harm you.
There are a host of other things that I did and as I remember them I will blog about them, but this should get you started. Remember these are things you do in addition to a good exercise and nutrition program.
