Exercise Tip: Doing Something You Like

Ever since I started this blog I have been evangelizing the importance of staying healthy and fit.  So you know I was ecstatic when I got my hands on a Federal government guideline that states that very thing.  Specifically, the guideline stated the following:

“Being physically active is one of the most important steps that Americans of all ages can take to improve their health.” SOURCE: Department of Health and Human Services: “2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans.”

The key with this guideline as oppose to previous guidelines was a de-emphasis on going to the gym and more of a focus on doing with regularity physical activity you like. Sounds like a post I did a while back. :-) But seriously, when I read this, I thought about it, and the truth is, that is exactly what experience has beared out in my own life.

When I initially found out I was diabetic, the first thing I did was play basketball.  To be honest, it was instinctive.  That was what we did in my neghborhood.  We played sports.  Now kids play basketball on Nintendo and Gameboy, while eating a honeybun.   Oops, I’m sorry I got a little off track. :-) The point is I lost 20 lbs.

I want to challenge my readers.  My challenge is two fold.  First, I challenge each of you to find something you like that will give you some physical activity daily and do it!  Second, I challenge any of you who are parents to turn your children’s Nintendo, Playstation, Xbox or whatever they have off and take a walk with your kids.  Better yet, comment and leave some suggestions of physical activities that people might like and can stick with.  I will get the ball rolling:

- Basketball: Not sure about non-urban areas, but there is some gym in every city that has open gym for basketball.  This is basically street basketball, so I would not do this unless you are accustomed to it, but if not and you like basketball.  There are alot of gyms that have basketball gyms in them that you can reserve to play with your friends.

- Bike Riding: This is probably one of the favorites of most people.  Washington, DC has some really awesome bike trails that you can ride on, especially in Virginia (you have to ride your bike on the George Washington Pkwy, it is awesome).

- Walking:  This is a favorite for neighborhood enjoyment.  If you live in a great neighborhood, this definitely can be fun.  You can take a book or iPod.  In DC, we have a lot great historic areas, like Old Alexandria, Georgetown, the Smithsonian that will give you a great workout.  Find out where you can go in your city and do the same.

If you have any suggestions that you think would be beneficial, by all means comment and share.  Remember, Stay Healthy!!  Your Life Depends On It!!
