Know What You Eat: Read The Label

Today I am about to do some shopping for my upcoming winter workout program and I was thinking about how I am amazed at the nutritional content in many of these foods that we think are “healthy”. I completely shutout processed foods like frozen meals with few exceptions. Why? Because if you look at many of those products you would be amazed at the nutritional content in those foods. How do you find out what is in what you are eating? Here is how? Most foods have nutrition labels. Here is a graphic (figure 1) that explains the nutrition label in more detail.

Figure 1

Here is the breakdown:

  • Arrow A - This section of the nutrition label shows the typical serving size for most people.
  • Arrow B - This section of the label lists the nutrients in one serving of the food represented by the nutrition label.
  • Arrow C - This section lists the ingredients in the food product. They are listed in order from the ingredients that makes up the largest part of the food product to the least.
  • Arrow D- This section shows the percentage of the food nutrients to the Daily Values based on a 2,000 kcal diet.
  • Arrow E - This section shows the percentage of daily vitamin and mineral recommended by the federal government.

It is absolutely important that you pay close attention to what is in the food that you eat. When I was growing up they used to say you are what you eat. Well if you don’t know what you eat than you don’t know what you are? OK, that is a reach, but it sounded good. That’s it. Let me know what you think and remember. Get Healthy!!! Your Life Depends On It!!!
